Objectives:
· To gain a better understanding of E-Learning with the use of social networking, discussion forums, a research project, and an analysis of a methodology that would work best in an online course.
· To produce quality (not quantity) work turned in on time, with cited sources at all times to familiarize the student with basic e-learning concepts, terms, and effective teaching approaches; i.e. learner-content, learner-instructor, or learner-learner content
· Face-to-Face sessions at least 5 times throughout the quarter where we will reflect on the status on the course, lecture through PowerPoint slides, videos, and discussion forums
· Use of Blackboard to post, comment, and receive comments (Due Sunday 8 PM each week)

Course Content:
415. Security Systems Management (IST 415)
"Advanced study in theory and practice of security systems management and the process of approval to operate. Analyze and judge information for the validity and reliability to ensure the system will operate at the proposed level of trust. Topics include information systems architecture, system security measures, systems operations policy, system security management planning, legal and ethical considerations, and provision for system operator and end user training. Course meets Senior Systems Manager (SSM) standards established by the federal government (CNSS 4012). Prerequisites: IST 410 or consent of instructor. (4 units)."
Intended Student/Probable Student Characteristics:
This Information Systems Management course is a requirement for all students studying Business Administration with a concentration in Information Assurance and Security Management. The intention is to gain a stronger understanding into security systems management and operate Red Teaming (hacking/penetration) at an ethical and professional level. This course is online, with structured lectures provided by the Committee on National Security Systems (CNSS), and online quizzes. In addition, successful completion of the course results in a certification as a Senior Systems Manager. The student must be well-versed in computer software, cyber-security terminology, and systems analysis and design. I now have a certification with the CNSS as a Senior Systems Manager.
Instructor Characteristics:
The course worked with CNSS guidelines which included demos and online lectures by cyber-security professionals. The instructors expected us to finish weekly online labs and complete levels of a video game, called Cyberseige by the end of the quarter. This type of visual interaction helped me better absorb content because if you did not succeed at a certain level of the game you would have to go back and complete the game until successful completion. The labs were steps by step manuals that included command prompt and Cain and Abel software.
Learner-content and Learner-Instructor: This course provides a student a chance to learn through techniques that work best for them. It is strictly online and is therefore based on learner (student) interaction with the content (lectures, demos, labs, and games). In addition, the CNSS is a great resource to use as a future cyber-security professional. The course was not mundane; rather, it was presented in many forms and deliveries. According to WPI, Incorporating Interaction into Your Distance Learning, “A survey of distance learning students in April 2007 indicated that they prefer text-based content with video and/or audio clips mixed in, followed by PowerPoint and Camtasia video files that combine graphics, text, and voice narration. Each of these formats addresses more than one learning style” (par, 4). I felt with the use of visuals, demos, and PowerPoint my engagement level was quite high.

Course Content:
"410. Information Systems Security Professionals (IST 410)
Advanced study in information assurance and systems security for information systems professionals. Creates a sensitivity to the threats to and vulnerabilities of national security information systems, recognition of the need to protect data, and information for processing them. Designing, executing, and evaluation principles and practices according to Information Security (INFOSEC) standards established by the federal government (CNSS 4011). Prerequisites: IST 309 or consent of instructor. (4 units)."
Intended Student/Probable Student Characteristics:
Just as the course before, this Information Systems Management course is a requirement for all students studying Business Administration with a concentration in Information Assurance and Security Management. The intention is to gain a stronger understanding into security systems management and operate Red Teaming (hacking/penetration) at an ethical and professional level. This course is online, with structured lectures provided by the CNSS, and online quizzes. In addition, our final exam was based on a comprehensive review of all materials discussed throughout the quarter. If a student did not receive a certain amount of points on the final exam, then they did not pass the course. I know have a certification with the CNSS as an Information Security Systems Professional.
In addition, this professor assigned us a Dumpster Dive project, where we were to go and retrieve data that SHOULD be considered classified by customers. Of course, we were to keep our findings anonymous. My area of research was centered in the Bank Arena in Redlands, CA. There, in my dumpster dive, I uncovered account statements and credit card numbers!! The assignment allowed my group members and I to work as a team and develop a community of research that was later presented to the professor.
Instructor Characteristics:
This course was also led by the CNSS, but deadlines and requirements were formulated by the professor. He made himself available through email and weekly office hours. Otherwise, this course was based strictly on learner-content, motivation, and a passion for ethical cyber-security practices.

In addition, the CNSS is a great resource to use as a future cyber-security professional. I appreciated the user of simulations, audio clips, and links to numerous sites to get the class more familiar with what CNSS was aiming to teach to further enhance the structure of the course. In terms of an effective learner-instructor atmosphere, we were provided more information about the certification we were to receive, which was reassuring. In addition, our professor was always available in providing feedback.

Course Content:
"699. STEM Education: Master's Thesis/Project
Independent graduate research or projects conducted under the direction of thesis or project committee. Prerequisites: ESTM 690, advancement to candidacy, approval of thesis/project by the student's advisory committee. (4 units)."
Intended Student/Probable Student Characteristics:This course is a requirement for STEM education students wishing to write a thesis as opposed to an examination. The course is based on face-to-face interaction with the student and their advisor/project committee to get their thesis approved and later presented. The student must be willing to spend hours of their time researching and interviewing to maximize the quality of their thesis. In addition, the student must have a clear idea of what the thesis stands for and how it can help it in the field of STEM Education.
Instructor Characteristics:
The advisor/project committee must be very honest with their thesis candidate seeing as a thesis may be the road to a future doctoral degree. This means the thesis must consist of quality work where the committee is required to give constructive criticism and positive reinforcement. In addition, the student and advisor should have bi-weekly or monthly visits to discuss the status of the research.
Learner Content-Learner-Instructor: As a thesis student, you have learned the details of your concentration and now is the time for self-reflection and an analysis of a topic that you either enjoyed the most or want to research more about. In addition, interaction with the advisor is the key to a well-written paper. It would also be a great idea to interact with those who have more technical and practical experience within the field. Also, this would be the perfect opportunity for the student to take advantage of synchronous sessions. This method saves time and money and is great if the student or teacher is unable to come to the office or is out of town.
